The Third Secret and the Great Apostasy...

"My child, they converse of the secret that I gave at Fatima. It is a simple explanation. It could not be fully revealed because of the drastic nature of My message.  How I warned and warned that satan would enter into the highest realms of the hierarchy in Rome.  The Third Secret, My child, is that satan would enter into My Son's Church." - Our Lady of the Roses, May 13, 1978

Pope Benedict XVI

Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict), in the 1984 interview with Italian journalist Vittorio Messori, stated that the Third Secret is concerned with "dangers threatening the faith and life of the Christian, and therefore the world. And also the importance of the 'last times,'... but the things contained in this Third Secret correspond to what is announced in Scripture..." [1]

 

Pope John Paul II 

“This message of Fatima is directed to every man. The love of the Mother of the Savior encompasses everything that touches the work of salvation. The object of its cares, is all men of our period, and at the same time societies, nations, and people.  The societies threatened by apostasy, threatened by moral degradation.” – Fatima, Portugal, May 13, 1982  [2]
 

Pope Paul VI 

• April 25, 1968: "Because, you know, the Church is now going through a spiritual moment of its history which is not serene, especially in some countries... It is thus, we said, not only by reason of the practical apostasy which is so widespread, but also and especially by reason of the uneasiness which troubles certain sectors of the Catholic world and affects the sensibility of those who have responsibilities in the Church. Each one knows it. After the Council, the Church has known and still knows, a grand and magnificent awakening, which we are the first to recognize and favor. But the Church has suffered and suffers still from a whirlwind of ideas and of facts which are certainly not inspired by the good spirit, and do not announce this renewal of life which the Council promised and promoted." • December 7, 1968: "The Church finds itself in a period of uneasiness, auto-criticism, we would say even auto-destruction. It is like an interior confusion, sharp and complex, which no one would have expected after the Council... We thought of a flowering, of a sane expansion of the ripened conceptions of the great assizes of the Council. That aspect exists likewise. But... we come to notice above all its dolorous aspect. As if the Church were striking itself." (Pope Paul VI, Discourse of December 7, 1968; Documentation catholique, 1969, col. 12);
   
• September 17, 1969:  "Numerous symptoms seem to announce grave uneasiness in the Church." (Pope Paul VI, Discourse of September 17, 1969; Documentation catholique, 1969, col. 853);
   
• December 3, 1969: "A sentiment of confusion seems to be spreading among the children of the Church, even among the best ones, and sometimes also the most qualified, those who exercise the greatest authority." (Pope Paul VI, Discourse of December 3, 1969; Documentation catholique, 1969, col. 1104);
   
• June 29, 1971: "We are at a moment of a crisis of the faith, a crisis which has repercussions indeed on other domains, on our whole religious, moral and social life." (Pope Paul VI, Discourse of June 29, 1971; Documentation catholique, 1971, col. 706);
   
• June 29, 1972: "From some fissure the smoke of satan entered into the temple of God." (Pope Paul VI, Discourse of June 29, 1972; Documentation catholique, 1972, col. 658).

Cardinal Ciappi
 

“In the Third Secret, it is foretold, among other things, that the great apostasy in the Church will begin at the top.” [3]

Cardinal Ottaviani

We know that Cardinal Ottaviani read the Third Secret and made reference to one of its themes on December 15, 1960, in an allocution to the members of the Marian International Academy. He declared: "It suffices to cast a rapid glance at what is happening at this moment in the world, in order to recognize that without the intervention of the Mother of all mercy near the All-Powerful, the world risks becoming pagan once more, a paganism more deplorable than the first paganism, because it is aggravated by apostasy. We are witnessing a veritable deluge of sins, a deluge which leaves behind it a nauseating quagmire, infected by immorality, lies and blasphemy..." [4]

 

 

Cardinal Oddi

On March 17, 1990 Cardinal Oddi, who was a personal friend of Pope John XXIII and who had spoken to him regarding the Secret, gave the following testimony to Italian journalist Lucio Brunelli in the journal Il Sabato: 

"It [the Third Secret] has nothing to do with Gorbachev. The Blessed Virgin was alerting us against apostasy in the Church." The Cardinal went on to say that "I would not be surprised if the Third Secret alluded to dark times for the Church: grave confusions and troubling apostasies within Catholicism itself...." [5] 

Bishop Alberto Cosme do Amaral, Bishop of Fatima
“The Secret of Fatima speaks neither of atomic bombs, nor nuclear warheads, nor Pershing missiles, nor SS-20’s. Its content concerns only our faith. To identify the Secret with catastrophic announcements or with a nuclear holocaust is to deform the meaning of the message. The loss of faith of a continent is worse than the annihilation of a nation; and it is true that faith is continually diminishing in Europe.” [6] 

 

Father Joaquin Alonso, official archivist of Fatima

When Father Alonso died at the end of 1981, most of his monumental work on Fatima remained suppressed. However, in one short book approved for publication shortly before his death, Fr. Alonso maintained that the Third Secret refers to a "crisis in the Faith of the Church and to the negligence of the pastors themselves." He based this conclusion on the fact that, as Sr. Lucy indicated in her memoirs, the words spoken by the Blessed Virgin begin: "In Portugal, the dogma of the faith will always be preserved etc." 

"'In Portugal, the dogma of the faith will always be preserved'. This sentence in all clarity implies the critical state of the faith which will befall other nations. That is to say that there will be a crisis of faith, while Portugal will save its faith". "Therefore", Father Alonso asserts, "in the period which precedes the great Triumph of the Heart of Mary, the terrible things which are the object of the third part of the Secret, will occur. Which ones? If, 'In Portugal, the dogmas of faith will always be preserved,' one can deduce from it with perfect clarity that in other parts of the Church these dogmas either are going to become obscure or else even be lost. Thus it is quite possible that in this ...period which is in question, ... the text makes concrete reference to the negligence of the pastors themselves.... One conclusion does indeed seem to be beyond question: the content of the unpublished part of the Secret does not refer to new wars or political upheavals, but to happenings of a religious and intra-Church character, which of their nature are still more grave." [7]  

 

Father Schweigl

Pope Pius XII charged Fr. Joseph Schweigl with a mission to personally visit Sister Lucy in August 1952. After questioning Sister Lucy on the Third Secret, on his return to the 'Russicum', Father Schweigl confided to one of his relatives, Father Cyrille Karel Kozina: "I cannot reveal anything about what I have learned at Fatima about the Third Secret, but I can say that it has two parts: the one concerns the Pope. The other, logically - although I should say nothing - should be the continuation of the words: 'In Portugal, the dogma of the Faith will always be preserved.'" ... Concerning the part which concerns the Pope, [Father Kozina] had asked: "The present Pope, or rather the next one?" To that question, Father Schweigl did not reply. [8]

Father Malachi Martin (Summer 1998)
In a four-hour interview on the Art Bell radio program, Father Malachi Martin stated that in February 1960, while he was secretary to Cardinal Bea (who was one of the close advisors to Pope John XXIII), Father Malachi was given the Third Secret of Fatima to read. Bound by oath not to reveal the Secret, he commented on different versions, which callers quoted to him on the program. He stated that Our Lady’s words were dry and specific. In response to a quotation that a pope would be under the control of satan, he responded, "Yes, it sounds as if they were reading the text of the Third Secret." He stated that the release of the Secret would provoke strong reactions. He stated that if the Secret were made public, the confessionals and churches would be filled with parishioners on their knees. He also stated that something very relevant to the U.S. is mentioned in the Secret. He stated that the central element of the Secret is awful, and that it concerns apostasy.[9]

These evil cardinals--under the seeming appearance of papal approval--imposed unlawful changes on the entire Catholic Church, made statements contrary to immemorial Church tradition, and promoted confusion that has lasted for decades. As a result, the great apostasy has come upon the Church and the world.]  
 

"This evening I speak to you, My child Veronica, for you to tell the world that to hide a fact is often destructive. And this fact will be made known now, with or without Lucy, or others, who cannot speak out because they are under obedience to their elders. You will repeat this, My child, though it may shock you.

He brought with him his agents—and satan himself, the deceiver of all mankind, sat in on Vatican II and maneuvered all the outsiders to come in and distort My doctrines and distort the truth.
     "At Fatima, My Mother tried to warn of this coming event, but who cared to listen? Who was interested in listening?...
     "Therefore, I must make it known at this time to you. If you are perceiving and interested in My Church upon earth, I do not have to explain Myself too fully; for you will already know of the chaos that satan has wrought when he entered My Church. And why did he enter, you say? This I want it made known, My child, and you will not be affrighted as you are now. And you will speak out for Me and My Mother and the Eternal Father in the Holy Spirit; you will speak out and say that satan is in the Church, My Church upon earth.
